It's too bad I can't give anything more than 5 stars because this deserves a thousand。 Lotr is by far the most epic fantasy series I've ever read, and if the author were still alive I'd write to him and tell him thank you for introducing this series into the world。 It's too bad I can't give anything more than 5 stars because this deserves a thousand。 Lotr is by far the most epic fantasy series I've ever read, and if the author were still alive I'd write to him and tell him thank you for introducing this series into the world。 。。。more

I remember a time when this book was compulsory reading for everyone of a certain age。In 1980, my next door neighbour loved Tolkien so much, and hated Terry Brooks so badly, he built a replica of Mount Doom in his back yard with copies of the Sword of Shannara, set it on fire and danced around it dressed as Bilbo Baggins。 The authorities arrived, and he was taken away to a secure mental hospital。That of course is all lies。 But the book is great! 😁

I am torn。 It pains me to give it 3 stars, for this does not reflect how high the highs in this book were, but there were also really low lows that keep me from giving it 5 stars。Overall, I'm happy I read this book, and would recommend it to anyone that is interested in fantasy。 J。R。R。 Tolkien is an incredible storyteller。 I am torn。 It pains me to give it 3 stars, for this does not reflect how high the highs in this book were, but there were also really low lows that keep me from giving it 5 stars。Overall, I'm happy I read this book, and would recommend it to anyone that is interested in fantasy。 J。R。R。 Tolkien is an incredible storyteller。 。。。more

The start of all modern roll playing games。Tolkien remains the master of modern fantasy universe building。 You owe if to yourself to dig into the book which became the Lord Of The Rings trilogy of movies。 I love the movies but the level of world building left on the cutting room floor only gives you a glimpse at the complex majesty of the world built by Tolkien。

Such an epic story。 The characters and imagery are truly unparalleled。 Tolkien was a literary genius。

I hardly feel worthy to comment on this masterpiece。Tolkien was a professor of historical languages。 He invented his own languages for the characters in his books, along with their cultures, legends, songs and folklore, not to mention the maps。 Personally, I loved the way in which the story began with small affairs, in the Shire, then expanded onto the epic stage, but ended with a return, of sorts, to the quiet world where it began。The Lord of the Rings is adored by millions, but even so it is s I hardly feel worthy to comment on this masterpiece。Tolkien was a professor of historical languages。 He invented his own languages for the characters in his books, along with their cultures, legends, songs and folklore, not to mention the maps。 Personally, I loved the way in which the story began with small affairs, in the Shire, then expanded onto the epic stage, but ended with a return, of sorts, to the quiet world where it began。The Lord of the Rings is adored by millions, but even so it is still massively under-rated, in my humble opinion。 Certainly it shoud be compulsory reading for all students in British schools, instead of the drivel they study nowadays。Tolkein may not have invented the fantasy genre but he certainly defined it。 。。。more

It’s hard to put into words how much I appreciate this story。 The best I can think of is that at its conclusion I wish I could erase my brain and read it again and experience it for the first time。

There is no other fantasy novel that has inspired so many authors as Tolkien's works did。 The world of middle earth is a magical and complex place, and its stories are a must read for anyone that enjoy fantasy novels。 There is no other fantasy novel that has inspired so many authors as Tolkien's works did。 The world of middle earth is a magical and complex place, and its stories are a must read for anyone that enjoy fantasy novels。 。。。more

Too much racism (e。g。, fear of the "black men" etc。, no POC heroes)。 Also, too much sexism (e。g。, the story of Éowyn, which was made much for feminist for the screen)。 But, of course, an amazing adventure in a world that ignites my imagination。 I wish it could be rewritten to not be racist and sexist。 Too much racism (e。g。, fear of the "black men" etc。, no POC heroes)。 Also, too much sexism (e。g。, the story of Éowyn, which was made much for feminist for the screen)。 But, of course, an amazing adventure in a world that ignites my imagination。 I wish it could be rewritten to not be racist and sexist。 。。。more

Is there a ridiculous amount of Elvish poetry? Yes。Does Tolkien really describe days of travel where all the characters do is look at trees? Tolkien hat ein enormes Fantasy-Reich entwickelt。 Einfach legendär。 Der größte Teil davon wurde auch tatsächlich verfilmt, was man nicht von allen Literaturverfilmungen behaupten kann。

This illustrated hardback is a beautiful production of one of my favorite reads。 I love the decoration on the page edges, and the illustrations! 32, to be precise (and contrary to other reviews I've seen, they get started right away - i。e。 pages i and v in the intro, and pages 20, 26, and 48-ish)。The two included maps fold out to a really nice size; I love that I can take them out and peruse as desired, especially in the larger size--really helps me dive in (compared to other copies of the book, This illustrated hardback is a beautiful production of one of my favorite reads。 I love the decoration on the page edges, and the illustrations! 32, to be precise (and contrary to other reviews I've seen, they get started right away - i。e。 pages i and v in the intro, and pages 20, 26, and 48-ish)。The two included maps fold out to a really nice size; I love that I can take them out and peruse as desired, especially in the larger size--really helps me dive in (compared to other copies of the book, where the maps are bound in with the rest of the text)。Absolutely love it。 。。。more
