“It is best to love first what you are fitted to love， I suppose: you must start somewhere and have some roots， and the soil of the Shire is deep”Another magnificent piece of work that I’ve delayed exploring for way too long， Tolkien built such a a fascinating compelling world that made everything you read seems so spellbindingly real， and unexpectedly familiar， as if you are already part of this world。 There is no excess here， LOTR is magical when it needs to be， grim when it needs to be， funny “It is best to love first what you are fitted to love， I suppose: you must start somewhere and have some roots， and the soil of the Shire is deep”Another magnificent piece of work that I’ve delayed exploring for way too long， Tolkien built such a a fascinating compelling world that made everything you read seems so spellbindingly real， and unexpectedly familiar， as if you are already part of this world。 There is no excess here， LOTR is magical when it needs to be， grim when it needs to be， funny when it needs to be， it speaks of beauty， friendship， weakness， magic， valor， sacrifice and malice in a delicately equipoised way。The language is unequivocally beautiful， the dialogues are captivating and superb， and they give a beating heart to Tolkien’s very interesting characters， and reveal so much that at first seems hidden， subtly hidden。The book is full of mesmerizing passages， that will linger in your mind， passages that got layers and layers of depth， that each time you read them they would reveal more meaning and wisdom， but I guess the most surprising thing to me was how much the poems grew on me， they’re gold， and I found myself coming back to some of them more than once！I believe LOTR is one of those books that you cannot read in a haste， you need to tread slowly through it， absorb all its elements， and dwell deeply into its world， its magic， and you will find that you cannot help but being allured by this breathtaking journey。 Same as the Hobbits this book is， seems so simple， but underneath， full of wonders。 。。。more

I remember a time when this book was compulsory reading for everyone of a certain age。In 1980， my next door neighbour loved Tolkien so much， and hated Terry Brooks so badly， he built a replica of Mount Doom in his back yard with copies of the Sword of Shannara， set it on fire and danced around it dressed as Bilbo Baggins。 The authorities arrived， and he was taken away to a secure mental hospital。That of course is all lies。 But the book is great！ 😁

The start of all modern roll playing games。Tolkien remains the master of modern fantasy universe building。 You owe if to yourself to dig into the book which became the Lord Of The Rings trilogy of movies。 I love the movies but the level of world building left on the cutting room floor only gives you a glimpse at the complex majesty of the world built by Tolkien。

This is still my favorite fantasy story of all time。 Every time I picked this book up for my evening reading， it felt like coming home。 P。s。 I also love that I now get the Silmarillion references。
